Lady Elizabeth

SDSU Rocket Project

Launched a record-breaking liquid bi-propellant LOX/LCH4 rocket to an altitude of 13,205 feet. The Lady Elizabeth project began in September of 2017 as we entered the Friends of Amateur Rocketry (FAR)/Mars Launch Contest. Our goal was to be the first university team to launch a liquid-methane and liquid-oxygen rocket to 45,000’ altitude under FAR’s Class 2 FAA waiver impulse limit. The project began under my leadership as President and I continued to support the project as a Senior Engineer. Our major accomplishments include some of the following:

  • Introduced new design processes and succeeded in our first Preliminary Design Review (PDR) and Critical Design Review (CDR).
  • Incorporated new project management tools and strategies (ASANA/Trello/Jira).
  • Designed, built, and tested our first student designed engine, our first test stand, and our first LOX/LCH4 launch vehicle.
  • Completed 4 successful engine hot fires (the first 2 under my leadership) and 1 successful launch vehicle static hot fire tests.
  • 1 successful launch vehicle hot fire.
  • Managed one of the largest budgets ever awarded to a student organization at San Diego State.
  • Integrated thousands of electrical and fluid connections.

Launched on February 1st, 2020.
