Galactic Aztec Heavy (Mk II)

SDSU Rocket Project

Galactic Aztec Mk II was a two and a half year project beginning in May of 2015. The rocket was massive for a student team: 24 feet long, 12" in diameter, and had a dry weight of approximately 250 lbs in the end, giving it the nickname Galactic Aztec Heavy (GAH). During this project:

  • We tested and developed new Thrust Vectoring Control (TVC) and Reaction Control System (RCS) technologies.
  • I was elected to my first leadership position as Design Lead in May, 2016.
  • I played a key role in the successful Static Hot Fire and TVC test on March 18th, 2017 (SHF-C)
  • I oversaw and assisted in preparation and operation of the igniter, pressurization, fueling, camera control, and avionics systems.

The last attempted launch date was on Sept 16, 2017, where the project came to an end due to an over-pressurization event and rupture of our liquid oxygen tank at T-minus 30 seconds.
